The No Revisions WordPress Plugin
[09-Jun-09 - Checked against 2.7.1. After an upgrade, you need to deactivate and reactivate the plugin to turn off revisions again.]
While the WordPress 2.6 upgrade has not gone smoothly for a lot of people, one new feature that has yet to bite too many people is post revisions. Whenever you save a change in a post in WordPress 2.6, it saves a copy of the old version as well as your changed version. If you hit ’save’ a lot while writing, that can add up to a lot of extra crud in your database.
Now, these can be turned off by editing your wp-config.php file, but that’s a bit gross for a system like WordPress where everything else can be done through a nice web interface. Better solution: the No Revision plugin.
Just install and activate this plugin and no more revision debris in your database. Of course, that also means no safety net if you accidentally screw up a post and then save it, but that was the case until 2.6 anyway.
I hope this proves useful. Let me know if you use it, like it, hate it, break it, have a suggestion for it, etc.

Why not just have it remove cruft older than X date?
wp-settings.php? Don’t you mean wp-config.php where you would add “define(‘WP_POST_REVISIONS’, false);”?
But thanks for the plugin. It’s definitely more elegant. Does it also get rid of the already existing revision records in the database?
@Tom: Because I was going for a quick and dirty solution. That said, maybe I’ll add a quick settings panel so people can choose that solution instead (since it is better).
@oriste: My bad for posting before going to bed. Thanks for the correction.
Just a heads up you may get a boost in traffic. Users of Podpress are borked until the programmer releases a new update, but your plugin allows some to fix the problem themselves. So you may see an influx of traffic as I go post it on the forums. Thanks!
@Patrick: Thanks for the heads up. Me likee traffic! Seriously, though, unless I make the front page of Digg, I should be fine. I’m glad my little hack can help some people.

hi. Thanks for plugin
perfect.
Regards
Something else to consider add is to only save the last X number of edits. I like having a backup in case something goes wrong, but I almost never need to go back more than 1 or 2 saves ago.
Hi jrrl,
This is good also for the reason that even though I did the wp-config.php hack and cleaned my database, as soon as 2.6.1 or whatever comes out, wp-config.php will likely be overwritten. It’s cumbersome to remember all the hacks I’ve done that aren’t handled in my theme.
Maybe WordPress will make this revision feature a selectable option/setting. Frankly, they should default to making all upgrade feature-changes and -additions selectable options.
The revisions were ruining the series plugin too. I let the author of that plugin know that.
Now, if you are able, will you create a plugin that turns off auto save? I tried a suggestion on the Internet to extend the time between auto saves, but it didn’t work. Auto save is the single most time-consuming feature of WordPress for me. I actually toggle my wireless connection on and off so I don’t sit there endlessly waiting for the incessant saves to complete.
Thank you for your effort. It is appreciated.

Apparently, it’s already been done.

Hi, I just upgraded to Wordpress 2.6 and the first thing I found out about it was how it saved the revisions. I didn’t like that and thought I was going to have to edit my config file. I did not want to have to do that. So I went searching for a plugin and I found yours. I just installed it and wanted to thank you for it. I think the wordpress developers should have made it an option in the dashboard to turn this on or off. Thankfully though, we have gifted people like yourself to help. Thank you so much.
