Top WebDAV Web Hosts
WebDAV, for those who don’t know, is an extension to the HTTP protocol (i.e. the way web browsers talk to web servers) that allows for Distributed Authoring and Versioning. This means with the right software you can treat your web site directory at your host almost like a local directory on your computer at home. It also means that you can tag versions of documents so you can backup to a previous version of a page more smoothly. For more on WebDAV, see webdav.org.
Unfortunately, not all hosts currently support WebDAV. In fact, very few do. Luckily, some of those few are pretty decent hosts. Here are my picks for the best WebDAV-enabled Hosts:
| Rank | Host | Review | Storage | Transfer | Price* | Comment |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | HostGator | read review | unlimited | unlimited | $6.95 |
You have to ask for it, but it is supported since they moved to Apache2 in late 2008. |
| 2 | DreamHost | read review | unlimited | unlimited | $8.95 | They have a nice tutorial in their support Wiki. |
| 3 | midPhase | read review | unlimited | unlimited | $6.95 |
Soon to be supported by default; right now you have to ask for it to be installed. |
| 4 | ANHosting | read review | 500 GB | 5,000 GB | $6.95 |
Same deal as with midPhase; just ask for it. |
