What Hosts Do Affiliates Use?

If you think about it, affiliates are a sort of pathological case for hosting. They have lots of sites and they rely on them for income. These are not dabblers, but serious web builders who can’t have their host go down without losing money. All of which raises the question of what hosts they use.

Conveniently, this question was recently asked on ABestWeb by Geno Prussakov, author of A Practical Guide to Affiliate Marketing and Online Shopping Through Consumers’ Eyes and major domo at AM Navigator, an outsource affiliate management company. Clearly, Geno is a guy who has good reason to ask this question.

So, what were the results? Well, you can see the complete poll results, but the top choices were these:

Rank Host Type of Hosting
1   HostGator  Shared unix hosting, reseller hosting, and dedicated servers
2  The Planet  Dedicated servers
 3   ThinkHost  Shared unix hosting
3   FastNext  Shared unix hosting, virtual private servers, reseller hosting, and dedicated servers
5   RackSpace  Anything you might want, but be prepared to pay.

I was impressed by HostGator’s popularity, given that it gained more votes than the next three put together; I’ll have to revisit them soon. Also surprising to me was ThinkHost’s placement, since they don’t offer dedicated servers. My thinking has always been that if I am running a bunch of sites, I want a server with root access and all that. Then again, I am a geek with control issues, so I might not be a typical affiliate.

Now obviously this is not a scientific poll and it suffers from all sort of selection errors. Even so, it suggests that these hosts are doing something right and might be worth a look.

I can attest to HG’s service… never had an issue with it, never had a site go down and the CS is the best I’ve seen… I can get a rep on the phone usually in less than 1 minute, and I’ve NEVER been disappointed in the results… also, they will happily move your site to another server within a short time frame if an upgrade is need…typically within a few hours.. First time visitor here, will bookmark it I like what I see.

About HostScope

HostScope is a new site that combines several of my web sites, both existing and planned, into a single place. Its focus is web design, development, technology, and general webmastery. As a result, it needs to cover everything from picking a web host to configuring a blog to monetizing your site. Whether I can live up to the challenge of this broad a mission remains to be seen, but it should be an interesting ride regardless. More info...
